Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Beginner's Guide
We report from the London press conference on everything you need to know about the new adventures of the literary detective
 | Overview
The cast and crew of the new Sherlock Holmes film were out in force yesterday for a press conference all about the revamp of Arthur Conan Doyle's eccentric detective. Director Guy Ritchie, stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams and Kelly Reilly, plus producers Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram were all in attendance.
The idea to revamp the series started with Lionel Wigram, a producer who's worked on the likes of Harry Potter. "I've been a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes since I was a kid, when my dad read me the stories," said Wigram. "It just occurred to me that there was an opportunity to make a new version of Sherlock for a modern audience. When I was read the books I realised that what I was seeing in my head wasn't quite what I'd ever seen on film. So I thought why not give it a go. I wrote it down as a story and had an illustrator illustrate it as a comic book, which I then brought to Warner Bros."
Everyone was very tight lipped on plot specifics at the press conference, but it was confirmed that it will be show us where Holmes came from. Producer Joel Silver said, "It is essentially an origin story, but an origin story for our universe...Holmes already knows Watson...and it's a big action movie"
The villain of the piece, Mr Black, is not one from any of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, but other characters from the series appear. McAdams will play Irene Adler, a woman who is both Holmes' love interest and nemesis. Kelly Reilly is Mary Morstan, love interest of Dr Watson (Jude Law).
