A Dangerous Method (2011)
Directed by David Cronenberg
Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud aren't names we'd usually expect to take the spotlight in Hollywood but with David Cronenberg's new drama that's exactly what happened. Michael Fassbender shows his versatility once again in taking on the role of the influential psychologist and his complex relationship with mentor and fellow seminal figure in the history of psychology, Sigmund Freud, and how Sabina Spielrein the troubled but beautiful young woman came between them. Into the recipe comes Otto Gross, a debauched patient who is determined to push the boundaries. Fassbender, being the versatile, much in demand young actor that he is, was chosen to play Carl Jung. A character he was thrilled to take on, the actor was intrigued by this relatively unknown episode in Jung and Freud’s lives. Nevertheless, despite being highly anticipated and one of the initial (the key word being initial) frontrunners to pick up the top prize in Venice (according to the Guardian), A Dangerous Method has proved divisive. But the fragmented picture is held together thanks to an absolutely enthralling and effective performance from Fassbender who demonstrates that his star status will only continue to rise.
