Awards season kicked off this weekend with the New York Critics giving out prizes as well as BIFA, and European Film Awards

AFI
When do they take place?
The nominees are announced December 11th while their annual private ceremony takes place January 13th 2012.
Who decides the winners?
Two 13-person juries composed of artists, academics, critics and AFI Trustees who discuss and deliberate the honoured ensemble to then decide on the ten best movies of the year.
How long has it been around?
The awards started back in 2000 but AFI itself has existed since 1967.
How good are they at predicting Oscar success?
Every year, besides three (2001, 2006 and 2008), one of their top ten picks has won the Oscar for Best Picture, but with ten to chose from this might be a long shot.
How many prizes do they award?
They don’t actually have categories – what they do is award what they consider the top ten American movies of the year. However, in 2001 they tried to present a “normal” award show with twelve different categories - their one and only try at this.
