Homeland returns to screens this autumn, however the sensational first season left so many pressing questions unanswered. Screenrush takes a look at some of those questions…

The award-winning series Homeland took televisions by storm when it premiered for the first time in October last year so you can expect things to be cranked up a notch when it returns for a second season this September. The series explores the reintegration of a US Marine, Sergeant Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), back into society following being held in captivity by Al-Qaeda for eight years . Returning to his wife (Morena Baccarin) and children (Jackson Pace and Morgan Saylor) he must reacquaint himself with normal daily American life. However CIA operative Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), after performing an unauthorized operation in Iraq, believes that he has been turned by the enemy and is planning an attack on American soil. Despite receiving a tip-off about Brody, Mathison has trouble persuading her superiors, particularly David Estes (David Harewood), that he has hidden motives leaving Brody's status as a war hero unquestioned. The only person to believe her story is her mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) however he can only support her from a distance due to his position in the CIA. So she must go the distance alone, to find the truth about Brody. Writer Gideon Raff based Homeland on his last series, Hatufim, which focused on the reintegration of two soldiers into society following their seventeen year-long captivity. Drawing inspiration from that series but adding in the topical themes of terrorism and American paranoia, Raff has created a thrilling situation into which he has thrown his characters.
Over the course of the first season the creators, including Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, managed to keep so many details hidden to further the suspense, however with a lot left still hidden or unsaid we take a look at some of those pressing questions that have been left unanswered... and if you've still not seen season one quick, watch it now.
