Plot Synopsis

An adaptation of the beloved 5 part series of childrens' books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, "The Spiderwick Chronicles" is a fantasy adventure following the Grace family. The twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory move away from New York to a secluded house on the Spiderwick Estate, owned by the children's great great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Before long things start to disappear and odd accidents around the house become more and more regular; the adventurous and short-tempered Jared gets the blame for the unexplained occurences. It is not until he explores further with his brother and sister that the truth begins to unfold; there is a fantastical whole other world of faeries living with the on the estate.

Screenrush Barometer:

"...an expert balance between twee fairies and scary monsters, cutesy rhyming couplets and desperate battles, child-friendly anarchy (apparently, you can kill a goblin by pelting it with tomato ketchup) and mum-friendly sentiment."

"The usual pious sentiments do turn up, but Waters has done a splendid job trimming these moments to the bone."

The review

Emeric - on 25/03/2008

I wondered if this would just be a second rate Pan's Labyrinth and although it has it's own merits it doesn't stand him against that other. I think the trick with a film like this is to load it with all too human sentiments and concerns and in this field it felt sadly lacking.
