Plot Synopsis

How could an orphan boy from the slums of Mumbai possibly know all the answers on India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? That's the question facing the authorities who arrest 18-year-old Jamal Malik on suspicion of cheating when he is just one question away from winning the top prize. Through a series of flashbacks, we see how Jamal fought his way out of his shanty town birthplace, met and lost the girl of his dreams and wound up on the biggest game show in all of India. But is he really a genius or were the answers learnt from a lifetime of blood, sweat and tears?

Trivia

Awards

Slumdog Millionaire was the undisputed star of the 2009 awards season, winning eight Oscars, seven BAFTAS, four Golden Globes and whole hoard more.

Criticism

The film was heaviest criticised after its release in India, inciting protests to be held nationwide denouncing the use of the term ?slumdog' and stating that the film fuels dehumanising western stereotypes. Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, a representative of a slum-dwellers' welfare group, has filed a defamation lawsuit against the film.

Soundtrack

It took A.R. Rahman just 20 days to compose the entire soundtrack.

Trainspotting

Danny Boyle references Trainspotting on numerous occassions throughout the film, e.g. the lead character diving into a toilet and the shot where Jamal and Salim jump down from a building to the ground, inspired by the Trainspotting scene where Renton jumps down into the frame.

A really absorbing film which captures your attention from the first frame. The story of Jamil, Salim and Latika unfolds as a result of Jamil being accused of cheating on the tv quiz show when his winnings stand at 10 million ruppees. How does he know the answers when he has little education and comes from the slums? Questioned by the police inspector he tells his life story one which reflects the [...]

The movie had me at hello, and I give all the credit to the superb Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, who plays the youngest Jamal. Most of the harrowing scenes from the movie, in addition to the dreadful slums, are part of Jamal’s childhood, and so, it is this child protagonist who must lay the foundation for the character, and make us believe that everything he is doing is for love for his sweetheart, [...]
