When he unintentionally hits a construction worker, he is forced to go into a retirement home. However, before they can take him, he and his house fly away with the aid of a million ballons. What Carl doesn't realise is that there's an unwanted guest on board - 8 year old Russell, a Wilderness Explorer whose trying to get an assisting the elderly badge, and whom Carl has taken a disliking to. Trivia

There's No Place Like Home

Within the film, there are certain scenes that echo The Wizard of Oz. "I think that's because it's so strongly in our subconcious" Docter said. "We'd find ourselves getting into situations where things referenced The Wizard of Oz too strongly and we had to step back and say how can we do this in ways that are not quite as close."

Golden Oldie

To create the character of Carl, the animators drew inspiration from their own grandparents, older people in their lives and actors including James Whitmore, Walter Matthau and Spencer Tracy.

The Challenge

In Monsters, Inc. the technical challenge was animating fur, in this feature, the toughest element was using the tools they had developed in new and different ways. The animators also made a concerted effort to stylise things more, to create a more pushed look. They also went to Venezuela to research the Tepui Mountains.

Round 2, Russell

The writing of the story got underway in 2004, however, Docter's collaborator, Bob Peterson, got pulled into Ratatouille, and so, he hooked up with Tom McCarthy, which took the project in a different direction, and saw elements added that weren't in the original script, such as the character of the young boy, Russell.

The review

BeetleJulz - on 21/10/2009

First thing I have to say about this movie is that it had all the elements to make a perfect movie(Comedy, Action, Drama, Romance). I would say this is easily in the top 3 animated movies ever made (or at least of the decade) if not the top. I wouldn't be surprised if this gets nominated for best picture and even win it all. Also, the short film before the movie is [...]
