Plot Synopsis

On the eve of World War I in a Protestant village in northern Germany, a series of unexplained events - the village doctor's horse is tripped over when he's out riding, the baron's son is abducted, a woman dies in a mysterious accident - lead to growing waves of suspicion, envy and doubt overwhelming the inhabitants while the school-teacher as the only outsider in the village tries to get to the bottom of what's been going on.
