The 24 year-old daughter of Thomas Craven, a Boston homicide detective, is killed on the front steps of his home. At first, it appears that Craven was the intended target but Craven discovers that his daughter led a secret life that made her a target. He finds himself confronted with a shadowy world of corporate collusion with government-sanctioned murder. Craven's singleness of purpose in finding answers about his daughter murder becomes a transforming experience for the experienced detective. |

New Yorker - Anthony Lane | Screenrush Barometer: |
| 'the reboot is an adventure - an efficient, politically inert fantasy that uses the hammer blow of violence to palm itself off as pertinent and gritty.' |
| Empire - Nev Pierce | Screenrush Barometer: |
| 'An uneven, somewhat meandering thriller is given emotional pull by Mel Gibson's excellent comeback performance. The lethal weapon hasn't lost it.' |
