In the 1960s, Richard O'Barry captured and trained the five dolphins who played the title character in the much-loved television show Flipper. Now having come to realise how much his actions may have affected these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures, O'Barry is adamant that no dolphin should be kept in human captivity. This documentary finds O'Barry and a crew of like-minded people travelling to Japan and the town of Taiji, a place that appears to be devoted to these majestic ocean-bound creatures. However, in a remote cove, surrounded by barbed wire and "Keep Out" signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and a market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. This film aims to reveal the shocking turth once and for all. |

The Sunday Times - Edward Porter | Screenrush Barometer: |
| 'In describing this, his movie delivers a rattling good yarn without stinting on reportage: we're told about the trade in dolphin meat, the high levels of mercury poisoning in the creatures' bodies and the dodgy politics of the International Whaling Commission. Psihoyos and his gang eventually got the footage they were after. The use made of it in the film is restrained and harrowing.' |
| Time Out - Tervor Johnston | Screenrush Barometer: |
| 'The sadness in his eyes, a window on the churning emotions he must confront on a daily basis, proves the most haunting image in a film that will leave you better informed, tearful and really angry.' |
