Harris Savides, one of the most respected and admired cinematographers in cinema has died at the age of 55
We're hearing word (via Adam Frisch posting on cinematography.com) that Harris Savides, the greatly admired cinematographer best known for his work on Gus Van Sant's highly acclaimed 'young death' trilogy (Gerry, Elephant and Last Days) has died at the age of 55. He had reportedly been sick for some time. After a highly successful career in shorter-form work (during which he won three MTV video awards), Savides got his big-screen break on Heaven's Prisoners. However it was his work with David Fincher on the director's follow-up to Se7en, the underrated The Game, that brought him wider attention. He worked once more with David Fincher (on Zodiac) and a total of six times with Van Sant (most recently on Restless). He also shot two Noah Baumbach films, lensed Woody Allen's Whatever Works, Ridley Scott's American Gangster and had just completed shooting on Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, his second collaboration with the director after Somewhere in 2010. He is survived by his wife and daughter, both of whom live in his native New York. Our thoughts are with all his family and friends at this terrible time.
