...a light that cast a shadow over new releases Life of Pi and Red Dawn
Thanks to several big blockbusters recently released in the States, Americans flocked to the cinema over the long Thanksgiving weekend. Holding on to its victorious spot at number one with $43 million was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 – a personal best for the franchise regarding the second week turn-out. Also still at the top were big contenders Skyfall (second place) and Lincoln (third place). Skyfall took in another $36 million in its third week, making it easily the highest earning Bond film to date, while Lincoln proved to be the real hero as it rose an impressive 19% from last week. These heavyweights left no chance for newcomers Rise of the Guardians, Life of Pi and Red Dawn. Despite its holiday motif, the Guardians opened at fourth place with $24 million, a huge disappointment for DreamWorks Animation. Following closely behind on the back of rave reviews was Life of Pi in fifth place with $22 million, while Wreck-It Ralph fell to sixth but still racked in $16 million in its fourth week and beat out newly released Red Dawn ($14 million). Flight dropped to eighth while underdog Silver Linings Playbook soared from 17th place to ninth after expanding showings to 367 locations. Lastly, it was a rough week for unfortunately timed limited releases Hitchcock and Rust and Bone. The former plans to expand to about 50 locations next weekend, while the latter’s expansion is still being determined.
Next weekend will see the release of two thrillers, The Collection and Killing Them Softly though don't expect to see either of them make an attack on the top spots.
