Everybody is outraged, including us.
If, like us, you're big fans of BBC's modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, simply titled Sherlock then you'll probably be just as disappointed to know that USA network CBS have comissioned their own remake entitled Elementary. This is a bad idea. Deadline had the news today that the titular detective will be played by British actor Jonny Lee Miller, who himself has previously worked with Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch in Danny Boyle's stage production of Frankenstein. Instead of London, Elementary will have Sherlock Holmes solving cases in contemporary New York City. Needless to say, we expected a little better of our friends across the pond than to be coming out with such a clear copy so soon. Not to mention that it stands to hurt Sherlock's ratings when it airs over there. American formats generally mean anywhere between 12 and 24 episodes per season, which is a formula that just wouldn't work when it comes to Sherlock Holmes' adventures. Besides, isn't House already a clear modern adaptation, albeit in a medical context? With any luck, it won't last and will be cast aside like the dozens of shows that get canceled every season.
