Take a first look at David Fincher's new thriller series, starring Kevin Spacey as vengeful politician, Francis Underwood
Sex, power and politics…these are the main themes of new political thriller House of Cards, a thirteen-part series, exec produced by David Fincher and chiefly written by Beau Willimon. The trailer has been unveiled, as well as a new poster and serves as our first look at the new show, which will stream in its entirety from February 1 on Netflix. The series is based on a 90s BBC TV series and a Michael Dobbs novel. Kevin Spacey stars as a ruthless politician, Francis Underwood, who vows to seek revenge on his superiors for slighting him: denying him the position of Secretary of State in the new cabinet. Spacey has previously played a masterfully manipulative villain for Fincher, but this time he’s joined by an equally Machiavellian wife, Robin Wright. Kate Mara also stars as an ambitious reporter, and becomes instrumental to Underwood’s plots. Fincher expressed that: “Francis is not amoral – actually, I guess he is amoral – but he’s apolitical. He’s in it for the ground acquisition of people like himself. He’s not betrayed by a differing belief system. He’s betrayed by politics. And his retribution is political.” The director’s list boasts James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross), Allen Coulter (The Sopranos), Joel Schumacher (Falling Down) and Charles McDougall (The Office). Could House of Cards be our new favourite series? What do you say?
