Red Dwarf is a 6 mile long mining space ship orbiting Saturn. On board, officers and miners live together for better or worse. Among them, David Lister secretly keeps a cat called Frankenstein, strictly against the rules, for which misdemeanour he is put in cryogenic stasis. Upon his awakening, the vessel is completely empty. The Red Dwarf computer, Holly, explains to him that his fellow shipmates died three million years ago due to a radioactive leak. Only he, and his pregnant cat, safely stowed away in the hold, survived the disaster. To keep Lister company, Holly revives his ex-roommate, Arnold Rimmer, in the form of a hologram. Unfortunately, Rimmer was not only Lister's superior officer, but his worst enemy -- and little has changed in three million years. The quarrelsome pair soon discover a third crew member, Cat, Frankenstein's humanoid descendent!
Dave, Cat, Arnold and Holly set out on a lonely search for Earth, with no idea what may have become of it in the intervening years...
